What it covers

Short-term limited duration insurance is built for emergencies, not everyday care. It’s insurance that works for a limited duration. See where this coverage helps most.

Covered

  • Emergency care

ER visits and care for sudden injuries or symptoms are usually covered.

  • Hospital stays

Get help covering inpatient care for unexpected illness or injury.

  • Help with extensive medical expenses

These plans are meant to prepare you better from big bills during a short gap in coverage.

Not covered

  • Preventative care

Routine checkups and preventive screenings aren’t usually covered.

  • Ongoing care

Mental health care, maternity care, and prescriptions are typically not covered.

  • Pre-existing conditions

Most short-term plans don’t cover conditions you had before enrolling.

Short-term limited duration insurance may not be available in your state. This coverage does not meet the minimum essential coverage requirements under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Be sure to check your policy carefully to make sure you are aware of any exclusions or limitations regarding coverage of preexisting conditions or health benefits. These plans may include a pre-existing condition exclusion provision. Your policy might also have lifetime and/or annual dollar limits on health benefits.
Plans vary. Be sure to check your policy carefully.

Frequently asked questions

Who is short-term health insurance best for?

Short-term plans are built for in-between moments.
They can make sense if you’re between jobs, waiting for employer coverage to start, recently graduated, or missed Open Enrollment and need a temporary bridge.
If you’re healthy and just want backup for emergencies, it can work well too. If you rely on ongoing care or prescriptions, it probably isn’t the best fit.

What does short-term health insurance cover (and what doesn’t it cover)?

Short-term plans focus on big expenses for very specific (and unexpected) things: emergency care, hospital stays, and treatment for new injuries or illnesses. It's a backup in case something goes wrong, not coverage for everyday care.
What they usually don’t cover: pre-existing conditions, preventive care, maternity services, mental health treatment, or routine prescriptions.
Those limits are part of what keeps premiums lower. But they matter, and you should understand them before you enroll.

Why is short-term health insurance cheaper than ACA plans?

Because it covers less. You’re mainly paying for limited coverage if something unexpected happens. It’s not coverage for everyday care.
That’s because short-term plans don’t include many of the benefits required in ACA plans. Plus, these plans can be selective and may reject applicants for things like age or pre-existing conditions.
So if you need ongoing care, take regular medications, or want targeted care, short-term plans usually aren’t a good fit.
